Market and competitiveness analysis of the Azerbaijan agricultural sector: an overview
Azerbaijan is a net-importing country of agricultural and food products. In recent years, prices for the
country’s main foreign currency source – fossil oil and natural gas – dramatically declined. Against this
background, the state’s government aspires to enhance the business climate for the development of a
competitive agricultural and food sector that would contribute, among others, to strengthening the
country’s food security and enhancing its rural welfare (Strategic Roadmap on Agriculture, 2016). An
additional strategic objective is to increase domestic production potential for either import substitution or
expansion of exports. This report evaluates market prospects for Azerbaijan’s current agricultural and
food products. It also assesses …

Arable Crops Sector Assessment Report
This report provides agronomic and economic information useful for investors in arable farming or open
field crop production. Arable farming is best done by cultivating a mix of arable and vegetable crops,
such as cereals, pulses, potatoes and/or onions, in a crop farming rotation system. Such a crop rotation
system has benefits in agronomic terms as it contributes to soil quality and biodiversity, backing
sustained positive economic results.
Cereals are of strategic importance in food security of Azerbaijan. The production of wheat, barley and
maize – the three major grain types produced in the country – play an important role in meeting the
demand of the population for bread and bakery products, as well as in supplying the animal sector with
feed stock. Pulses, potato, carrot, onion and gourds are important for human consumption and fit well as
rotation crops with cereals. For a sustainable production…

Fruit Sector Assessment Report
The fruits sector consist of different types of orchards and fruit production. Fruit trees and perennial
plants grow as multiannual woody crops bearing fruits. In this report, first the key features of the fruit
cropping sector in Azerbaijan are described. Typically for most fruit bearing trees, it will take 3 or 4 years
after the establishment of an orchard before harvesting may occur, and some years longer before the
orchard is fully productive. Therefore, next to the direct investments in the production also a period of
building up the orchard or plantation to a cropping field has to be taken into account. This requires…

Poultry Sector Assessment Report
The poultry sector consists of different sub-sectors of which poultry meat and egg production are the
most important. Also the turkey and duck production is part of the poultry sector. In this report we focus
mainly on the poultry meat sector. Production of poultry meat is mainly based on growing and
slaughtering of broilers. Limited attention is given to egg production due to the lack of information and
data.
In the report we use data based on official statistics. Often these statistics do not match with
quantitative information from other sources or data collected during field visits. Official statistical data is
leading and if these data differ much from other sources we mention this in the report…

Protected Vegetables Sector Assessment Report
The sector protected vegetables consists of vegetable products cultivated in different types of protected
environment, such as structures with plastic film (low and high, single and multi-tunnel) or glass cover.
In some cases also nets are being used to protect the crop against insects and/or extreme climatic
situations (such as cold temperatures, high irradiation and hail). Protected cultivation offers the
possibilities to control the cultivation better than in open field cultivation with consequently higher
production, better quality and better input efficiencies. In this report the key features of vegetable production in Azerbaijan and in particular vegetable production under cover will be described. Next, the products’ use, markets, government policies and the sector’s business environment will be analysed. This note concludes by suggesting investment opportunities and providing recommendations how sector development could be promoted…
